Vandalism

[edit]

Due to many of the most recent edits being vandalism, I would like to suggest either Pending Changes protection or Semi-Protection.

End of the shogunate, wrong proclamation (王政復古の大号令)

[edit]

The English translation of Meiji Tennō's proclamation from January 3, 1868 is wrong. It refers to Satow (A Diplomat In Japan, p. 353), but Satow gives another date, Feb. 3, 1868. Satow's text is clearly a diplomatic note to foreign embassies, while the proclamation of Jan. 3 [Keiō 3/12/9] is directed to the Japanese people. It is also much more detailed and can be found here: https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E7%8E%8B%E6%94%BF%E5%BE%A9%E5%8F%A4_(%E6%97%A5%E6%9C%AC)#%E7%8E%8B%E6%94%BF%E5%BE%A9%E5%8F%A4%E3%81%AE%E5%A4%A7%E5%8F%B7%E4%BB%A4 --Bescheid (talk) 09:06, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

End of the shogunate: What edict?

[edit]

There's reference to "the young Emperor's edict" of 3 January. It's unclear what is being referred to here, although I note there is reference elsewhere in this talk page to a 'proclamation' of that date. The Charter Oath seems to be something different as that was in April according to the linked article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by SDavies (talkcontribs) 18:06, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Homosexuality

[edit]

It should be added that though Japan doesn't have any recorded history of criminalizing homosexuality it was during the Meiji Restoration from 1872 to 1880 where homosexuality was briefly criminalized 197.186.3.115 (talk) 21:29, 7 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox picture

[edit]

hi all! i'm currently in the process of going through this article systematically when today i noticed that the infobox image was not actually of the event of the restoration itself, but of the promulgation of the meiji constitution in 1889 (an event that isn't even mentioned in the article, though hopefully i'll get to that over the coming weeks). as a result i propose we change the picture to something like the image below. it's good quality and iconic, while being contemporary to the majority of the period of the article. please feel free to discuss or object, i'm also curious if anyone has any knowledge of public domain images that depict the actual 3 january proclamation? even if produced after the event.

Emperor Meiji in 1873

Yes this is clearly more appropriate, given the date. Go for it. Rollo (talk) 15:15, 13 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

English variety

[edit]

hi all, in order to avoid an editing conflict and gain a consensus about the english variety to use i though it would be best to bring it up here rather than risk looking chauvanistic and seeming as if i own the article. when i first started overhauling the article i remember seeing instances of both british and american english (although it might behove someone to check if that was the case). my plan was (and still is) to conduct a pretty comprehensive overhaul of this article and hopefully get it to GA status, which i've paused until may so the wiki ed programme currently using this page isn't given difficulty (it also gives time for other editors to consider and change what they dislike/is inaccurate/doesn't follow the mos concerning my edits). because there was no tag, and i default to using british english, and the majority of the article was thenceforward written using it, i decided to place british english tags on the article to maintain consistency. @69.212.114.107 has since reverted this change informing me that i may be indefblocked ([1]) for doing so, it isn't my intention (or aim!) to be blocked or violate wikipedia's standards; so any comment or guidance is appreciated.--Plifal (talk) 04:29, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
